Running a Family Office with Dirt Under Your Fingernails

By Roy Chapin

CEO/Proprietor, 4 Winds Winery

People tend to romanticize both vineyards and family offices. I understand why. One suggests beauty, craft, and land. The other suggests sophistication, strategy, and multigenerational wealth. But from where I sit, both are also about discipline, diplomacy, and timing.

At 4 Winds Winery, those worlds are not separate. They overlap every day. One minute, I am thinking about capital allocation, estate planning, land stewardship, and long-term family alignment. Next, I am walking vineyard rows, looking at vine balance, irrigation, canopy, and the early signals of what a vintage may become. In a family enterprise like ours, nothing is neatly compartmentalized. Financial strategy affects operations. Operational decisions shape brand value. Family dynamics run through all of it.

That is what makes next-generation leadership so complex. You are not just managing assets. You are inheriting responsibility for a legacy, and then deciding how to carry it forward without becoming captive to it. You have to know what deserves protection, what needs to evolve, and where clarity matters more than comfort. That takes more than good spreadsheets and good intentions. It takes governance, patience, and the ability to make hard decisions without losing sight of why the enterprise mattered in the first place.

Wine has taught me that the best outcomes rarely come from force. The best results rarely come from pushing harder. They come from paying attention, exercising restraint, and knowing when to act. The same is true in a single-family office, where the work is a constant balancing act between heritage and performance, relationships and accountability, and pride and practicality.

That is the work. And on the best days, it is also the privilege: building a business, stewarding a place, and shaping a family legacy that can hold its value in every sense of the word.
